Reviewed by Nicola:

As a life long back-pain sufferer, I was delighted to be asked to review The 3-in-1 Femme Elite Tens machine. I have only found temporary relief with other methods over the years so I was very optimistic about the 3-in-1, especially as it offered the added bonus of toning up my pelvic floor AND my post-pregnancy tummy.

The unit is discreet and lightweight so can be worn comfortably whilst every day life goes on. It cannot be seen under clothes and the pulse of the stimulation is not so powerful as to be noticed or to hurt or make you jump.

The unit is supplied in a soft carrying case with an instruction booklet. The guidelines on putting the unit together are clear. The outer packaging states that the unit is pre-set but I went up to an hour on one programme and it was still pulsing so I turned it off and am still not sure whether it would have turned off itself. I also found the diagrams indicating where on the body to place the electrodes difficult to work with as my post-baby body is a very different shape to the 'perfect' form in the illustration! The electrodes looked much further apart on me and I noticed that every time I lifted them from my skin to reposition them, they became less adhesive. The electrodes were difficult to position correctly on my back or shoulders without someone to help.

I used the TENS machine regularly on my pre-existing back pain and found that it provided no relief at all. However, I also used it on a new pain in my shoulder from carrying my increasingly heavy baby and felt a rapid and noticeable improvement in the area so I suspect that the existing pain may be too deep rooted to be affected by such a relatively short trial.

I was daunted by the prospect of inserting the PFS probe but actually found it very easy to use. I did not notice a difference in the strength of my pelvic floor but it was not weak before the trial. I have also not seen an improvement in my abdominal muscle tone as a result of using the unit but recognise that there was a great deal of work required in that area and with just two small electrodes this may take considerably longer than the review period allows!

Pros

  • Convenient
  • Discreet and lightweight
  • Easy Instructions
  • Brings short term pain relief

Cons

  • Electrodes are too small
  • Positioning guide illustration was not clear
  • Found no improvements to pelvic floor or abdominal muscles over the short term
