I have been using the Steer 'n' Grow Smart Trike from Mookie for a several weeks now with my 11⁄2 year old son, and what a great start for him. He loves trundling up to the end of the road, going to the village shops and other short trips around the neighbourhood pinging the bell as he goes and the combination of seat belt and sideguards really help to keep him safe, secure and in place.
We have had a lot of compliments about this lovely little trike and how happy my son looks in it and it really is very well designed with some nice touches. The sideguards come off once your child is big enough to get on and off on their own and there are even two sets of pedals!
One is the standard drive pedals on the front wheel which disengage for the early days so that they don’t keep going round and bash into delicate legs and the other set are fixed foot rests which fold away tidily into the chassis once your child is old enough to pedal for themselves.
On the not so positive side, I found that the steering handle can be a little hard and tiring to use single-handed, especially when fighting a little darling that wants to wiggle the steering all the time, and so it might have been better as a T-bar, like on a scooter.
My husband complained that it took a couple of tries to put it all together properly but once he got there, the various options and parts that can be removed over time are very easy to work out.
All in all though this trike has excellent build quality and represents great value for money given how it is designed to be used by a growing child.
